50kW Hybrid Inverter — Three Phase for Cold Storage and C&I

50kW is the point where a hybrid inverter stops shaving peaks and starts carrying a process. Below it, you are trimming demand charges; above it, you are running compressors, pumps and production lines through an outage without stopping. EverRay supplies the EVR-H50K — three-phase 380/400V, 50kW continuous, four MPPT trackers, high-voltage LiFePO4 from 100kWh to 300kWh, parallel to 300kW.

  • 50kW continuous, engineered for motor loads and continuous duty rather than evening peaks
  • 4 MPPT trackers — separate strings for roof sections with different orientation or shading
  • 100–300kWh of high-voltage LiFePO4 on the same inverter
  • Generator hybrid with programmable start threshold
  • MOQ 1 unit, 1–2 weeks lead time, CE / IEC, UL 1741 on request

The 50kW class is usually paired with a 100–300kWh rack or cabinet — enough to carry a cold store or a water treatment plant through a full shift.

What changes when you move to 50kW

Three real differences, and none of them is “more of the same”:

  1. Motor starting headroom. 50kW covers about 150kW of inrush for two seconds — enough for a 37kW pump on a soft starter or a bank of compressors starting in sequence. The 30kW class cannot do this without external hardware.
  2. Continuous duty instead of peak duty. A cold store or a treatment plant runs 16–24 hours. At 50kW/200kWh the discharge rate is 0.25C, which is why these installations reach their design cycle life instead of cooking the cells in year two.
  3. Parallel architecture as the default. Above 50kW, most buyers plan for a second unit later rather than upsizing now. Six units in parallel reach 300kW on the same platform and the same monitoring.

Battery sizing for continuous loads

With a 50kW inverter the question is not “how long can it run” but “how long must the process survive”. Four rack sizes cover the range:

Rack size At 20kW load At 35kW load At 50kW load Typical site
100kWh ~4.5 h ~2.6 h ~1.8 h Water treatment, short outages
150kWh ~6.8 h ~3.9 h ~2.7 h Cold store, one shift backup
200kWh ~9 h ~5.1 h ~3.6 h Multi-shift plant, EV depot
300kWh ~13.5 h ~7.7 h ~5.4 h Full-shift autonomy, diesel displacement

Usable capacity is approximately 90% of nameplate. For cold storage, size on the compressor duty cycle rather than on connected load — the compressors cycle, and a 50kW site often averages 28–35kW.

Four applications that decide this class

Cold storage and packing houses

Three or four compressors, 15–22kW each, cycling on temperature. The failure mode is not a long outage but a short one during a pull-down cycle, when product is at risk. 50kW with 150–200kWh carries the compressors through 3–5 hours and keeps the room inside tolerance. This is the single most common 50kW application we quote.

Water treatment and pumping stations

Pumps are the opposite problem: high inrush, long duty, remote sites. With VFDs on the pumps, 50kW handles a 30–37kW pump plus controls and chlorination. Off-grid operation is common here — PV during the day, battery at night, generator only in the rainy season.

Multi-shift manufacturing

Two or three shifts mean the load never drops, so the battery is sized on overnight hours rather than on an evening peak. 50kW + 200kWh typically covers 4–6 hours of the critical line — enough to finish a batch and shut down in order instead of losing work in progress.

EV charging depots

A 50kW inverter with 200kWh of storage buffers two 22kW AC chargers against a weak grid connection: the site draws a flat 20–30kW while the battery absorbs the peaks. For DC fast charging, this class is too small — see the note below.

Generator integration and the fuel calculation

Most 50kW projects already have a diesel generator, and the economics are decided by running hours rather than by equipment price. A typical cold store in a weak-grid market runs the generator 8–12 hours a day at 60–70% load. With a 50kW/200kWh hybrid, the generator starts only when the battery reaches its floor — usually 2–4 hours a day.

That difference is 200–300 litres of diesel a month at typical consumption, plus a large reduction in maintenance intervals. In most quotations we have seen, the hybrid pays for itself on fuel and generator wear alone within 18–30 months, before demand-charge savings are counted.

Parallel and expansion

The 50kW platform parallels to six units, 300kW total, with one master and the rest following over CAN. Two practical consequences:

  • Buy for today’s load, expand for next year’s. Two 50kW units cost less to add in stages than one 100kW unit bought upfront, and the second unit can come with its own battery rack.
  • Redundancy without a second design. If one unit needs service, the remaining units carry the critical panel at reduced capacity — no single point of failure at the inverter level.

When 50kW is the wrong size

  • Too much: a hotel with a 40kW evening peak and no continuous process is better served by the 30kW three-phase hybrid inverter — same platform, lower cost, and 64kWh is enough for 4–6 hours of backup.
  • Not enough: three compressors starting together, a 55kW motor on direct-on-line, or a site that needs more than 300kWh of storage belongs in the 60kW three-phase hybrid inverter class or a containerised system.

If you are still comparing sizes, the three-phase hybrid inverter range from 2 to 150kW lists the PV window, battery range and parallel limit for each class side by side.

What to send for a quote

  1. Load list with duty cycle — which machines run continuously, which cycle, which start together
  2. Peak demand from the last three bills, and the tariff structure if demand charges apply
  3. Backup requirement — hours, and whether the whole site or a critical panel
  4. Generator size and current running hours — this drives the fuel calculation
  5. Destination port and Incoterm

Send these five items and we return a sized configuration, a single-line diagram, a generator-integration scheme and a price within 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Can a 50kW hybrid inverter start a 37kW motor?

Yes, with a soft starter or VFD. Direct-on-line, a 37kW motor draws roughly 220kW for two seconds, which no inverter in this class will carry. With a VFD the inrush stays below 1.5× rated and the 50kW inverter handles it comfortably.

How much PV should I pair with 50kW?

50–75kWp is the usual range, depending on how much of the load runs during daylight. The four MPPT trackers let you split the array across roof sections with different orientation, which matters on industrial roofs.

Can it run without a battery?

It can run grid-tied without a battery, but the economics change completely — you lose backup, peak shaving and generator displacement. In practice, 50kW projects are bought for the battery function, not for PV alone.

What is the difference between a 50kW hybrid and a 50kW grid-tie inverter?

A grid-tie inverter stops when the grid stops. A hybrid keeps a backup port live, manages battery charge and discharge, and can run off-grid. The price difference is modest; the functional difference is the entire reason for the category.

How many units can be paralleled?

Up to six 50kW units, 300kW total, sharing one battery bank or each with its own rack. Units must be the same hardware and firmware revision, which is why we ship parallel orders together.

What is the MOQ and lead time?

One unit, 1–2 weeks for standard configurations. Battery racks ship with the inverter so commissioning does not wait on a second shipment.
